Bathrooms, kitchens and bedrooms should have minimum dimensions in order to organise them correctly on the floor plan. It is true that the minimum dimensions of a room are not as important as those of a bathroom, but we want you to have no problems for the future organisation of the room, whether it is for double beds, single beds or children’s beds. As architects in Gandía and surroundings, as architects in Jávea, etc…, who have done hundreds of projects of new construction and reform, we want to give you some advice.

Depending on who is going to use the room, or what the room is intended to be used for, different measurements must be respected.

Measurements of a room depending on the beds

Depending on the type of bed that is going to be placed in the room, the minimum dimensions of a room will be one way or another. This will be the first piece of furniture to be taken into account for the organisation of the rest. If a room is built and then the bed is not adjusted correctly and comfortably, then it will generate problems in the distribution in such a way that it will be very uncomfortable to use the room. We know that beds can be of any size, but today we are going to base ourselves on the most standardised measurements.

We have to start from the measurements of the beds:

  • King size bed: Less used than the others, but some people prefer it this big. The room should be quite large as the mattress is 200cm wide and 200cm deep, i.e. 2x2mBed
  • Queen size: This size is the most common for ‘large double’ rooms, as it has a width of 150cm and a depth of 200cm, i.e. 1.5x2m.
  • Double bed or ‘de matrimonio’: This used to be the standard size for couples’ rooms in Spain, but nowadays the queen size is more commonly used. The double bed is 135cm wide and between 190 and 200cm long.
  • Single bed: This is the most commonly used bed for children or teenagers, and is usually 90cm wide and between 190 and 200cm long.

Minimum bedroom dimensions

To design the perfect bedroom you must first consider the placement of the bed. Start by placing the bed with the headboard against one of the walls and normally try to place it against the north wall. If it is a couple’s bed, it is placed in the centre of the room, leaving a comfortable clearance on the rest of the three sides.

If, on the other hand, you are designing a bedroom for a child, the bed is usually placed against two walls, in one of the corners of the room. One of the reasons for placing the bed in a corner, apart from being safer, is to leave more free and available space in the rest of the bedroom, as children and teenagers tend to want to use the room for more than just sleeping, whether to play or to study…

The minimum dimensions of a bedroom around the bed are quite clear, as it should be about 70cm in all directions for easy access and passage. But this distance is not only between the wall and the bed (unless you don’t want to put any other furniture), but you should also keep 70cm from furniture, wardrobes, desk, etc…

Dimensions of bedroom doors

A curiosity that you may not yet know about the location of the bedroom door is that it is always placed at the foot of the bed and never directly at the headboard. So remember to leave enough space to open the door properly so that it doesn’t hit the bed or other furniture.

The location of the window in a room

All bedrooms should have windows as a matter of course for both ventilation and natural light. Its location is not really that important, but what should be avoided is putting the bed right under the window. Regardless of whether you decide to put it here for design and decoration, it is not recommended for several reasons. One of the reasons for this is that the window does not insulate as well as a wall, neither acoustically nor thermally. It is also important that the window can be opened properly to allow air to enter the bedroom without any problems.

Distribution of wardrobes in a room

The minimum inside measurements of a wardrobe should be at least 60cm, as this allows us to hang hang hangers, which are normally 45cm wide. We often recommend 65cm cabinet bottoms if sliding doors are to be fitted. Although nowadays it is possible to make a wardrobe with customised size and dimensions and there are many other ways to store and organise clothes.

In order to have a perfect home and to have all the correct measurements and in accordance with the regulations, we always advise you to put this in the hands of our architects. Contact us without any obligation!
